Bingo has always been a popular source of entertainment in Canada however statistics show that traditional bingo clubs continue to report a decline in income regardless of the fact that there 65% of clus have closed in the last 10 years.

Competition in the industry is tough with the introduction of online bingo and casino sites, and bingo halls provided charities with much needed cash and many of them are now also struggling.

A Gala Bingo club that was purchased by a church and a private company called Medinbrand is to be used by local groups. Campaingers do not want another church and were after a cinema or arts centre to benefit the community.

The Grade II building in Church Road, Camberwell was purchased by the Evangelical group who plan to move from their current location in Peckham Rye. Local residents have been invited to meet with the church committee to discus possible uses for the church outside of the time it is needed by the church.

Edward Thompson one of the biggest suppliers of bingo stationary has invested £2m in a new bingo printing machine. The company based up in Sunderland can produce up to 200m bingo tickets a week after installing the high-speed digital colour printing press.

The Tombola TV advert showing a white man in a dinner suit and a black man in a floral shirt sitting by a fire has been banned. In the ad the black man is playing a ukulele and repeating in song everything the other man said.

While we regularly see details in the press regarding campaings to keep local bingo clubs open we have never seen a campaign with the aim of knocking down a bingo club. It has been claimed that the Mecca Bingo club in Norwich is an eyesore, and nearly 60 years ago an agreement was reached that the building would be knocked down when the lease expired!

The Opera Bingo site which closed in 2004 may be knocked down. The site, built in the late 1800s, currently houses a number of shops and had previously also been a cinema and bingo club.

According to an article in The Times, Gala Coral, the UK's largest bingo operator could see the existing debt pile cut from £2.6 billion to £1.85 billion.  Bingo Supermarket reported last month that Gala was in refinancing talks with a consortium of investors led by Apollo Management along with Goldman Sachs, Park Square and Cerebus Capital Management.
