Online gaming operators may find the industry less attractive as the Australian government considers a new innovative proposal aimed at combating online gaming which is illegal within the country. The proposal being considered is to legalise chargebacks on credit cards so that online players that take part in casino, poker or bingo games could use their credit card to deposit funds and then if they don’t win they could make a chargeback on their credit card. As such online gaming operators would not want to take deposits off Australian residents. Although the Australian law prohibits online gaming there have been no known prosecutions even though it is reported that there is an estimated A$1 billion wagered online by Australians every year. Xenophon, an independent senator in the Australian parliament, is the man behind the proposal, which seeks to crack down on illegal internet betting. He is also proposing a review of advertising controls. "With voided credit card bets, I have to say there's something appealing to me about online casinos losing their shirts rather than the punters," Xenophon told the local media. ''It would certainly make online casinos think twice about accepting Australian cards.'' |
