Plans to knock down the art deco building which was the former home of a bingo club in Hatfield have been approved by the local council. The site will be redeveloped to accommodate 111 student bedrooms and two retail units. The new plans, put forward by Village Homes, have been scaled down from the previous application submitted to the council last year. Agent Ian Taylor commneted: “We personally consider this to be an improvement. The scheme wouldn’t result in overdevelopment of the site. “It will breathe life back into The Common and retain the character of the local area.” The building had been a cinema before being converted into a local bingo club which operated until 2007. It is believed the UK bingo tax structure and the smoking were the reason behind the demise of the club. The new development would consist of two buildings, one of which would house 72 bedrooms, a gymnasium and communal laundry room, while the other building would have 39 bedrooms.
