A heroin addict that stole Poppy Appeal tins from a bingo club and other premises has been caught after staff recognised him. Carl Mason, 29, admitted stealing six Poppy Appeal tins to buy heroin. He was caught after staff at two of the premises he targeted – Boots and Santander bank – recognised him on CCTV. He has been charged with stealing tins from a variety of businesses in Blackburn including a bingo club, a building society, a chemist, a video shop. He also tried to steal a RNIB collection tin from a pub. Prosecutor Philippa White said: “Despicable is the only word I can think of to describe this.” Magistrates were told how Preston recently got out of jail for similar offences. His lawyer said he was “ashamed”. Mason is due to appear before magistrates again tomorrow.
