A former Gala Bingo club was demolished last week as bulldozers cleared the site to make way for a new supermarket. The bingo club in Rugby will have good memories for locals dating back to the 60s. The building in North Street was sold last year and there are plans to use the site for a supermarket and shopping centre. The building originally started of f as a picture house and also host big name acts including the rolling stones. The chairman of town centre management company, Robin Richter commented: "In a way it is sad to see the building come down as it holds a lot of happy memories, especially for the over 60s. "However the building has been in a poor state for a number of years and something had to be done. "As to what's going to happen with the site, well that’s still up for grabs. I think the economy will have to improve before we get anything definite." MP Mark Pawsey said he had fond memories of when he would visit the building, then the Granada Picture House, as a youngster:: "The first time I ever came to Rugby from my home in Binley Woods was to see the Sound of Music there with my mum in the 1960s - well before I came daily once I had started at Lawrence Sheriff School."
