The online gambling company, Unibet, has confirmed it will be withdrawing from the Spanish markets as new legislation comes into effect on 1st January 2012.

The email only confirms that Unibet and Maria brands will no longer accept deposits from residents in Spain from 20th December 2011. The online gambling brands will however still accept money from other Spanish speaking countries via the Unibet Brazilian website.

Views as to the plans are split with some speculation that Unibet is temporary ceasing operations in order to gain a legitimate license to operate within the Spanish borders. Other comments suggest that this is a final move due to the high taxes and restrictive legislation. Unibet are yet to confirm their future intentions.
