A last ditch attempt is being made to keep the doors open of a bingo club in Bristol. Bingo Supermarket have been in touch with the Riva Gaming Group who own the club and have confirmed the bingo hall is going through a consultation process. The Riva bingo hall is a very modern style club situated on the ground floor of a modern shopping centre. The company has given the Management and staff 30 days notice to improve the business otherwise the club will close its doors.
The recent tax hike on bingo duty has delivered the final blow to the bingo club and closure is expected unless business dramatically improves and the government are prepared to reduce the tax level down to a sensible amount in line with bookmakers. Riva Bingo Bristol is not a club that is short on popularity, but the economic climate has reduced customer spending and money that is being made on the bingo is being used to pay in tax. The government are yet to give the industry any positive news that the tax issue will be reviewed, but surely the government must see that allowing bingo clubs to shut at this rate is going to mean the Treasury is actually worse off in the long run, 15 percent of something is better than 22 percent of nothing. Unfortunately BingoSupermarket have reported on many bingo club closures in the last 12 months and the future of the land based industry is looking bleak. Mecca Bingo club in Stevenage may also be under threat. Bingo Supermarket will post an update on the situation at the end of this month. |
