Many reports are now being featured in the press about the recent bingo duty change from 15 percent to 22 percent. BingoSupermarket recently reported on how Mecca bingo believed the government had increased the bingo duty as a 'backlash' from the VAT court battles that are still ongoing. Independent owner and operator of UK bingo clubs, Roger Cooper has already indicated the government are discriminating against the females favourite pastime and the government are looking to ruin the industry whilst cashing in as much money in the meantime before they lose the next election. Roger Cooper is following Mecca by writing to MPs to not only ask for change but also answer the question why they believe they are being fair. Mr Cooper stated "The bingo industry led by Mecca bingo have already fought for change and won, so for the government now to raise another tax to make up for their loss is a draconian attitude and unfair, almost an abuse of power."
Many Liberal Democrat MPs have raised the issue and asked for an ammendment to the tax bill but some Tories and New Labour opposed the move and in particular Angela Eagle is going as far as campaigning against any change, Angela Eagle is the exchequer secretary to the Treasury and opposed to the transparency of MP expenses, her expertise in the Treasury is also clear for all to see. She stated last year that the economy heading into recession is " A strong over-hysterical reaction" and the economy is "strong and stable". The government underestimate the voting powers of the bingo customers and how many people the government could end up alienating. The vast majority of UK land based bingo players are working class females, the very same people that voted New Labour into power. The government have not delivered on their promises of "no more boom and bust" and are now losing their way. The Government is turning its back on the people who have shown its support and the only way the bingo industry is going to be heard is sadly from a new government. The industry will appeal for the Conservative goverment to review the bingo duty, whilst it appears the Liberal Democrats and the Scottish National Party have many MPs already lobbying with the bingo industry.
