THE world's biggest cruise ship boasting its own open air park, amphitheatre and the most sophisticated floating gaming area was officially unveiled this week.
Oasis Of The Seas the £800million vessel was launched at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, by American company Royal Caribbean.
Weighing a mind-boggling 225,000-tonnes and measuring 1,187ft in length, the ship can carry a staggering 6,296 passengers.
Guests can have the option of a sea or tree view as 254 rooms have balconies overlooking a "Central Park" style open air space.
The mammoth vessel, which was built in Finland, also hosts a 750-seat AquaTheater modelled on an ancient Greek amphitheatre and a bar that can move between levels.
Other amenities include loft-style apartments and an ice rink, plus pools, 24 restaurants, a casino and even a carousel.
Pop singer Rihanna performed a concert last night to celebrate the launch of the ship which boasts British actress Jane Seymour and Gloria Estefan as godmothers.
Despite the recession, Royal Caribbean have confirmed they are building another ship of the same size due enter service next year.
It represents a £1.6 billion investment in the industry by the company with competitors like P&O and Cunard also expanding their fleets in Britain and America in recent years.
On the past few days the ship has undergone the final touches in preparation for pre-inaugural festivities. It kicked off with an exclusive private performance by pop music artist Rihanna, the first performer ever to take the stage on Oasis of the Seas', Thursday 19th November 2009 Oasis of the Seas then made her national television premiere on ABC's "Good Morning America," Friday November 20th.
The official naming ceremony for Oasis of the Seas will take place on Monday, Nov. 30 during a one night inaugural celebration fundraiser to benefit the non-profit Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.
Oasis of the Seas features the largest and most sophisticated casino and gaming area afloat: Casino Royale. There is a themed walkway entrance, The Museum of Gaming, exploring the history of gambling. Design elements include dramatic sculptures, crystal chandeliers, and hues of amethyst, aquamarine and ruby. As for the meat and potatoes of the casino, you'll find 450 slot machines; extensive table games including Blackjack, roulette, craps, and Caribbean Stud Poker; a bar and lounge area; a sports book; a poker room; and a players' club. As with the majority of the modern day cruises bingo will be a regular activity. Oasis of the Seas is expected to have the latest electronic bingo terminals allowing players to play numerous games, jingling when your down to a few numbers. |
