Gala bingo players in Burnley could soon be able to  enjoy smoking while playing their favourite past-time. The bingo club on Centenary Way, has applied for planning permission to build a smoking shelter, that will also include a selection of gaming machines to be used while customers are outside.

The plans also include a low-level PA system, so that customers using the shelter can continue playing.

Gala Bingo have built similar shelters in a numer of their clubs across the country which have proved to be successful and popular with regulars.

Nationally bingo halls have been affected by the smoking ban and have looked at ways to keep customers who were used to lighting up during sessions.

A spokesman for planning agents Fisch Design, who have worked on the plans said: “The works are relatively minor, involving the erection of a free-standing smoking shelter frame with polycarbonate roof.

“Fencing will be erected to form the perimeter of the terrace and will also partially enclose one side of the shelter.

“Existing fire-exit doors leading from the main club will provide patrons with uninhibited access to the terrace.”

To ensure that the plans meet the current legislation, two sides of the shelter will remain completely open.
