A former bingo club in County Durham may have a new lease of life. City Hospital Sunderland is seeking approval from Durham County Council to convert the former bingo club and amusement centre into a health centre. The disused club at 17 North Road in Durham is believed to be a listed building. According to the records the building has not been used since February 2008. Plans are to include internal alterations, new doors and windows. A spokesman said: “The applications relate to some early stage feasibility studies regarding the provision of local services. “At this stage, no decisions have been finalised regarding the exact make-up of those services.” While the bingo industry has generally suffered in the last few years as a result of the smoking ban and changes to the tax laws, some clubs have benefited. The nearby Hippodrome Bingo Club has gone from strength to strength during these times making things for the competition even more challenging. |
