Firefighters were called to the Mecca Bingo club in Huddersfield to rescue a distressed group on Wednesday at 8.20pm.
Paramedics were also called as a 78-year-old woman who was part of the group was found to be faint and breathless. The group of bingo-goers got stuck in a lift, at the Folly Hall, Mecca club.
The group of six were trapped for around 25 minutes before emergency crews forced open the doors.
While the rest of the group were unhurt the pensioner was treated on site. Huddersfield fire manager, Andy Blackburn, urged people who suffer from claustrophobia to consider using the stairs rather than lifts.
He said: “We get called to a lot of lift rescues.
“If people are a little bit claustrophobic it is the worst place to be.
“It is worth thinking whether it is worth taking the lift.”
Mecca General Manager, Michelle Winfield, commented: “The lift doors became stuck. We couldn’t operate them so we called the fire brigade who arrived and were fantastic.
“We have had the engineers out this morning and the lift is back in operation today.
“We are also sending a bouquet of flowers to the all ladies who were stuck in the lift.” |
