A great-grandmother has celebrated her 100th birthday by returning to her local bingo club with 50 of her bingo buddies.
Lydia Clark, had a family party over the weekend and in addition decided to celebrate with friends and Haringey Mayor, Eddie Griffiths at the day centre at Woodside House, Woodside Park High Road. Councillor Griffiths who presented her with a pair of embossed whisky tumblers commented: “It is a great privilege to see somebody who is not only 100 but an active 100 as well.”
Mrs Clark, who has been a widow since her husband, Herbert, died in 1977 was still ballroom dancing at the age of 90 and still visits the centre to play bingo and see her friends once a week. Asked by the councillor what keeps her going she replied: “Just accept things and don’t worry about them. And have a glass of sherry now and then.”
Originally from Edmonton, Mrs Clark had ran a newsagent’s in Palmers Green with her husband for many year’s. She added: “I met my husband when I was 18, and I liked him because he was with it. I couldn’t work during the war because I had babies. I’ve got a good memory, and I’ve always been positive. I never got depressed.” At 29 years old she was a mother-of-four during the war. She recalls the air raids and bombs falling.
Mrs Clark celebrated her 90th birthday with a trip to the London Eye. |
