Weatherspoons has unveiled their plans for the conversion of a recently purchased bingo club. They have applied to Fenland District Council for a change of use and have made a detailed application with the changes they intend to make to the Hippodrome Bingo club located in March. A company spokesman confirmed that the main changes include a new front entrance from Dartford Road which will include period styled glazed double doors. The semi circular glazed panel and surrounding art deco feature will remain but will be repaired and repainted. On the ground floor the sloping floor will be modified to create a level floor that will be a large open plan customer area. “The bar area will be designed to reflect the aesthetics of the existing architectural internal characteristics of the building,” the spokesman commentated. Wetherspoons intend to make changes to allow natural light within the building creating a more modern environment. Plans include removing the staircase enclosure off Darthill Road and “in doing this it forms a large area where natural daylight can come through. It also allows the company to form a summer opening façade with side opening sliding doors.” A slate profiled roof will replace the asbestos roof sheets “to blend in with the surrounding roof scape”. The building is not currently a listed building or in a conservation area although Wetherspoons claims that their proposal are to carefully refurbish the building.
