Sylvia Sharp-Cardigan, won the jackpot at Gala Salford, couldn’t believe her luck. The 67 year old has been playing bingo every week for more than 30 years. In addition to spoiling her family she plans to fulfil her ambition of seeing Elvis’s home. Sylvia who is a cook at a care home commented: “It took a few days to sink in that I’d won but now I plan to fulfil some life-long dreams. “I’ve always loved Elvis, in fact I remember it was just after I’d come home from the bingo in 1977 that I found out he’d died! “I’m hoping to use some of the money to go to Graceland next year which is something I’ve always wanted to do.” Sylvia is splitting her prize money with her daughter Sharon, 46, who was her bingo buddy when she won the full house on the famous ‘High Five’ game at the Gala Bingo club and also plans to treat her husband, William Cardigan, 62. Not only did Sylvia win an impressive amount of money but she also made all the other players at the club a lot richer as well. The rules of the ‘High Five’ bingo jackpot mean that Sylvia got half of the £250,000 jackpot and the other half is split equally between all the other bingo fans that were playing bingo in the club at the time the jackpot is won. There were 105 other lucky players in the club that night, all of which have scooped over £1,000 each. “It was great to get the full house but great to win money for everyone else as well,” added Sylvia, who also has a son, Stephen, 44, and nine grandchildren. “Everyone was coming up to congratulate me and I couldn’t believe I’d won so much. The manager had to get me a glass of brandy and I couldn’t play my second game of bingo. “I was shaking like a leaf and didn’t sleep for days afterwards. “I’ve not celebrated the win properly yet because I’ve been waiting for Christmas so I could spoil the family.” Sylvia is also planning to fulfil another lifelong dreams including going on a pilgrimage to Lourdes with her church, St Marks in Pendlebury. Sylvia is not giving up her bingo, even after winning a life changing amount. She added:?“Even though I’ve won I’ll carry on playing. I’ve been going for more than 30 years and I love it. There’s a buzz to it – if you win it’s great but even if you don’t you still have a good time.” |
