Leeds City Centre could get a new bingo club in the future under proposals that have been put forward. Plans, by local developer, Rushbond, are to restore a landmark building in the city to its former glory. The grade II-listed building in City Square, which was built in the 1920s has stood empty for the past four years. It opened on June 5 1922 as the Majestic Cinema with a restaurant in the basement. The proposals would see the basement used as a live music venue and nightclub and the ground and upper floors used as a bingo club, cinema or leisure facility. The Majestic was originally part of a group of cinemas. With a capacity of 2,800 it was converted to a bingo club in 1969 and later used as a night club in the mid 1990s. In 2010 the building was put up for sale and purchased by the developer after an application to use it as a casino was rejected by both the local council and the Leeds Crown Court during an appeal hearing. The statement says: "The Majestic building is a key part of City Square. |
