A photographer has claimed that his work is inspired by watching people play bingo. While talking about his work to the Guardian, Michael Hess told how his favourite photo is of a man playing bingo.

The photo was taken at a bingo club in Biggleswade and shows a man concentrating on the numbers on his ticket. Mr Hess claims that he particularly likes the photo as it looks like it could have been taken in the 1960s and not in 2008.

The German photographer described how bingo is not so big in his country and he was interested in the how popular the game is throughout the UK. He also mentioned the attraction of how so many of the old bingo clubs are located in previous cinemas.

Hess spent five years taking photographs in bingo clubs mainly in Liverpool and Newcastle.

"I liked the smaller, independent bingo clubs best - that's where you get the strongest characters," he adds.
