Bookmakers in Northern Ireland could soon be open on Sundays the Social Development Minister has revealed. In addition the stakes and prizes may also be increased following the levels seen in England. While the government may look to relax some of the rules, Alex Attwood suggested there would be new measures to prevent problem gambling, which could include a tax on the industry to help with research and treatment related to problem gamblers, and social responsibility code of practice for operators. The minister commented: "The current regulatory system is fragmented. Close supervision of the industry is needed to keep crime out of gambling, protect the vulnerable and promote fairness. "I welcome views on creating a single licensing body with new powers to impose penalties on gambling operators for breaches of licensing conditions. "There are decisions to be made in this area of complex public policy and I wish to ensure that everyone in the community has the chance to comment." While the National Lottery is the most popular form of gambling other new forms of gambling in recent years, particularly those online, have meant that the current law is becoming less effective. Currently bookmakers and licensed bingo clubs are not allowed to open on Sundays however the new proposals would relax these rules and according to the minister would help with local economy. Increasing limits on stakes and prizes could provide the industry with further revenues and help to discourage excessive and illegal gambling. A survey conducted in 2010 showed that three quarters of those over the age of 18 in Northern Ireland took part in some form of gambling within the 12 month period. One in 50 showed signs of problem gambling which is claimed to be four times higher than in Great Britain.
