Bingo Club to be Converted to Supermarket

Tesco has encountered numerous problems as it tried to knock down an old bingo club and two stone cottages to make way for a new superstore.

The supermarket giant planned to build a 10,000 square foot store off Burns Lane in Market Warsop. Plans were held up as it emerged that both the cottages and the old bingo hall had some intrinsic value due to their age and architecture. The cottages were built in the 1920s and the Strand bingo hall was a landmark and had some art deco features that English Heritage wanted to preserve.

Public opinion to planned demolition was enough to make Tesco backtrack on its plans and produce drafts of what the store and surrounding area will look like following the planned developments.

Tesco are now claiming that 67% of those spoken to are now in favour of the development as long as the cottages were left in situ along with the front of the Strand bingo hall. With the look of the street being preserved thee would still be the benefits of the new superstore.
