Bingo sessions are again being used to help stop pensioners becoming victims of crime following a number of burglaries. It seems at this time of year as the darker nights draw in there is an increase in crime targeted at the elderly. Local Police are working with Mecca Bingo in Breightmet in a bid to get as many of the elderly residents to the special bingo / crime awareness event. Following 23 incidents being investigated by the Police where conmen have stolen £20,000 from elderly victims the Police are looking to warn the residents about distraction burglaries. In the latest burglary, a 66-year-old man was targeted by three criminals posing as drain workers, who conned their way into his house and stole cash. In addition to cash, bogus officials have stolen jewellery, mobile phones, personal papers and valuable coin collections. The awareness event will run from 9:30am until midday and will be run by the Police, Trading Standards, Victim Support and United Utilities. Police are encouraging pensioners to attend the Mecca Bingo club on Friday, where they will be giving advice out free attack alarms. Winners of the bingo games will get bingo prizes donated by local businesses. The Bolton Crime-reduction adviser Chris Waters commented: “These criminals prey on the most vulnerable in society, conning them out of or stealing vast sums of money, which in many cases is their life savings.” For further details about the event call Chris Waters on 0161 8565764.
