HM Revenue & Customs in the UK has given up the legal fight with the gaming industry over bingo tax. Rank, the parent company of Mecca Bingo, took up the legal battle over bingo taxes and has seen the tax department in a number of courts finally gaining the support of the European Court of Justice.

Rank noted in a statement yesterday that HMRC will not be contested the claims for overpaid VAT on bingo any further. The European Court of Justice made its decision last month on 10th November and a spokesperson at the time suggested that HMRC would consider the details.

While the battle over VAT on bingo is now over, HMRC have said that they will be concentrating their efforts on fighting Rank’s claim for overpaid VAT on gaming machines. Rank has to date claimed back £30.8 million. It is expected that the next hurdle will be in the UK courts in 2012.
