Two cowards have attacked a pensioner that was walking his wife home from bingo. The 71 year old was battered by two drugged up men in the unprovoked attacked. Wilf Smelt, 71, was kicked and punched by Scott Turnball and Brian Williamson outside of his home while his 70 year old wife watched helplessly. Williamson, 38, and Turnball, 29, have been sentenced to two years in jail for the attack at the hearing at Hull Crown Court. On 26th June at 10pm, the attackers had shouted at Smelt, who is British, “Get back to your own country” before beating him with his crutches and kicking and hitting him around the head ten times. The wife told the police he was “dripping with blood”. Mr Smelt added: "We live quiet lives and we are very pleased it is all over now so things can go back to normal. "The bruises are still fading and justice has been done for me and my family. "It was down to the courts how long the men served in jail, but I am happy with the sentences they have been given." Judge Jeremy Richardson QC said: "The attack was unprovoked and prolonged. "This was an appalling case of two young men attacking a defenceless elderly man in a vicious attack. "They were badly shaken by this attack and have been left scared in the evening of their lives. "Neither of them has slept well. "The location of the crime was a private road where help was not at hand. Mrs Smelt was present and watched in horror at this attack. "Individuals who perpetrate a sustained attack upon an elderly man with his wife looking on in shock outside their own home, without recourse to any help and are very vulnerable, deserve severe punishment. "It seems to me to be just a matter of chance that more serious injury was not occasioned. "I cannot ignore the effect the crime has had upon these two senior citizens who are now scared and shaken by the ordeal you both viciously visited upon them."
