Bingo Newsflash! Early day motion reaches 100
Tuesday, 23 June 2009 16:33

The first step towards reviewing the unfair bingo tax system has been reached. Labour MP and back bencher Mr Dhanda Parmjit put forward an Early Day Motion in the Houses of Parliament for the topic of the tax system to be debated in the House.

It is believed before an Early day Motion is passed, you have to reach at least 100 signatures from other MPs and today that milestone has now been reached. The EDM has cross party support and although government ministers and shadow ministers cannot sign an EDM, the bingo tax issue has raised so much backing from all backbenchers, the tax hike will now be debated in the House that will give the public and the industry an opportunity to demonstrate in public how unjust this new tax regime is.

The new Speaker of the house Mr John Bercow is also backing bingo and signed the EDM 7 days ago, The tory MP was announced as the new speaker of the house yesterday.

The labour party have 63 signatures, conservatives 11, independent 3, Liberal Democrats 17, Plaid Cymru 1, SNP 4, and the Social labour and Democratic Party 1.

Bingo Supermarket would like to pay tribute to Mr Dhanda Parmjit MP, for bringing about the early day motion along with Lynne Jones and Bob Spink for being swift in signing the motion and raising awareness. Liberal Democrat MP Mr Don Foster who has also signed the EDM has always shown keen support for land based bingo and the bingo industry has always welcomed his support.

As the MPs come under increasing pressure from the public to address the imbalance of taxes for bingo, the only members of the Government that now need convincing are the decision makers. Bingo companies in the UK will unite and protest on The Green opposite Westminster before the Finance Bill. Government Ministers have so far ignored appeals from the bingo players and operators often citing changes in job roles as being the reason for not being in a position to discuss the issues in their constituencies.

The Bingo Industry has come together that has rarely been seen since the days of the strikes. Mecca Bingo have already taken the government to the High courts and won on VAT issues. The Government sometimes forget that they are elected to represent the people of Great Britain and not please themselves or over tax reputable and regulated industries to pay for their expenses and bail out the banks.

Bingo Players do not drain the state, they contribute to it by partaking in bingo games. Bingo profits need to pay for staff, utility bills, rent as well as rates and licences that are yet another tax to pay. 15 percent is fair and inline with other forms of gaming including online bingo, sportsbook betting and pools, 22 percent is greedy, unfair and will kill off the bingo industry.
