Bingo Club owner Roger Cooper has once again hit out at the government branding the recent tax increase as sexist. Speaking to his local press, the Worcester news has reported how bingo players in the area are up in arms over the bingo tax issue and have signed a petition with over 500 signatures.
Since the publication Mr Cooper has now called on his local MP Michael Foster to sign an early day motion in parliament to consider the future impact of the increase in bingo duty form 15 percent to 22 percent. After careful consideration that only bingo was subject to the 22 percent tax hike, Roger Cooper has stated this is a sexist tax as it targets females and also affects many pensioners who like to frequent the bingo club on an afternoon. Noticing that the tax has not affected online gaming or sportsbook betting, Roger Cooper is putting more thought provoking arguments to the issue. "Is this a blatant attempt by the government not to affect an industry where it has its own interests namely the Tote." The government are looking to sell the Tote off to a private company, so to apply the same tax to this industry in the same manner would devalue a product that is owned by the government. Since the Treasury are remaining defiant on this issue, the bingo industry is staging a protest outside the Houses of Parliament on 1st July 2009 at 12 noon. Around 2000 bingo players and operators are expected to capture media attention and raise awareness with MPs. Anyone wishing to get involved in the campaign can write to their local MP and ask him/her to sign an early day motion that has been put down by Dhanda Parmjit, quoting reference to the MP EDM 1569. The bingo industry are appealing to anyone with an interest in bingo to get involved.
